It’s once again October. A month I love not just because it’s my birth month, but because it brings awareness to so many important issues. And while I absolutely adore the support of breast cancer and the plethora of pink October brings with it, there is another important issue rarely spoken about. One that affects more than one in four women – that’s more women than breast cancer, ovarian cancer and lung cancer combined. What is it? This unspoken truth is Domestic Violence.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
This October don’t forget to pair that pink with a purple purse. Helping get the word out about this hard to talk about subject, the Allstate foundation is helping give a voice to the issue of domestic violence with the purple purse campaign. The Purple Purse was brought forth by the Allstate Foundation to symbolize and proudly represent a women’s way to escape the cycle of abuse by gaining financial independence.
There are many women out there suffering in silence without a support system, without a voice, and left feeling hopeless or maybe they’re just hoping it will get better. I, myself, was left surprise finding out my own best friend, an amazing and strong women, was left to suffer with the secret of domestic violence behind closed doors and it made me question everyday how can we help support the women in our lives even further.
The Purple Purse
As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, The Allstate Foundation is sending more than 1,000 purple purses carrying domestic violence information throughout the country. These purses will be passed between co-workers, friends, and family, sparking important conversations along the way. For every purple purse passed through the end of October, The Allstate Foundation will donate $5 to YWCA.
