Was Walmart Family Mobile the Best Wireless Plan for Us? #Cbias #Shop

One month ago I was introduced to an affordable cell phone service for the entire family. With Wal-Mart Family Mobile we have no contract and an unlimited plan for just $40 per month - $35 each additional line. This month I am back to let you in on how our new cell service compares and if we will be going ahead with our plans to get our boys' a phone for back-to-school.

Walmart Family Mobile powered by T-Mobile

I think the most important issue with any new cell service is just that, the quality of service. Previously, with my now ex provider, I had issues accessing the web and online features in certain areas and especially in-store.  Now, I of course, often need web access in-store for my job, but many people need fast reliable service for things as simple as accessing couponing apps etc. I always chalked my bad service up to some kind of in-store interference, never thinking it was an issue with my provider.

With my Samsung Galaxy 2S and Walmart Family Mobile Plan, powered by T-Mobile, I don’t just have access to the web in-store and all around town, but I am finally able to stream movies from services like Netflix to my phone without a lag or interference to keep the kids occupied. This is a huge bonus for me!! I can't believe I went so long with such spotty, unreliable service.

Galaxy Phones available with the Walmart Family Plan

Now there is a "speed boost" option with the Unlimited Talk, Text & Web plan, which includes unlimited web access for all lines on the account, and up to 1GB of shared Speed Boost each month. This means that once the first 1GB of data is used each month (by all users on the account) web speeds are reduced to 2G speeds.  Even though you have the option of purchasing additional speed boost time starting a $10 a month, I admit I wondered if this would wind-up being an issue.

Walmart Family Mobile Data Usage #Cbias #Shop

As you can see however, I didn’t come close to going over and with all the free Wi-Fi available now, I’m no longer concerned. And if you're wondering how usage might change once the kids are added to a plan? Walmart Family Mobile also has that covered.

Setting Limits with Family Controls

I remember with my last post some of you expressed concern with wanting your child to have a phone for emergencies and such, but feared giving them unlimited access. Well I don’t blame you and this one an issue weighing heavy on my decision to provide my own boys with phones.

After having experiencing Walmart’s Family Plan first hand and having time to look into all it entails. I am officially reporting that my boys will be getting phones for back-to-school thanks to the plans family controls.

With these controls as the main account holder I will be able to not only assign limits to minutes and messages, manage allowed numbers, limit access to certain times a day, but what the mom in me likes most however is the ability to turn data on and off and use a Web Filter to restrict access to adult web content.

Billing

My first bill will be due on 8/1. Any day now I will receive a test message reminding me that my bill is due, which I love, since as a busy mom I can never have too many reminders!

Walmart Family Mobile is also a postpaid service meaning instead of having to run out and top up our minutes each month, we are billed after we've used the service. Payment is simple and can be made via the Family Mobile Account Management site. This is also where you'll find your family controls, account summery, usage data and more.

All the Smartphones you love

While test-driving the Walmart family plan I was provided with a Samsung Galaxy 2S smartphone, just one of many smartphone favorites available on with the Walmart Family Mobile plan - including the new Samsung Galaxy 4 and iPhone.

For someone like myself I often wonder how I got by before smartphones. It's very important for me to have access to email and web while on the go, and honestly, I can't help but think what would become of me if I couldn't share photos via Instagram and play Candy Crush nightly ;-)

While my husband and I will opt to sticking with one of the many smartphones compatible with this plan, for our children we are able to choose a simple phone that will allow them to keep in contact in case of emergency during the school day, or if they are out and about with a friend. And as they get older and their needs grow we can upgrade them without any hassle. No contract means we can upgrade whenever we want!

#FamilyMobileSaves

Thanks to the real life affordability of this plan I can feel a little more secure when sending my kids back-to-school. Now that might sound silly, but if you could see how much even the teachers in our district rely on the children having their own phone, you would understand.  As an example my son came back from a trip 2 hours early last year. The kids with phones were able to call home and get picked up; my son had to hang around, outside, until we showed up at the original pick-up time! Needless to say I wasn't thrilled.

In a nut shell our experience has been more than positive for service, value and features. I would absolutely stand by the fact that this is the best wireless plan for us.

I have been checking this service out because it intrigues me. The monthly price seems affordable.

That is affordable. I knew Walmart had a big cell center but didn't realize they offered their own service in this way.

I have heard great things about the phones and services that Walmart has to offer. And although I don't have to worry about that yet, I like that it has the parental controls. One of these days my guys will be ready for a phone.

Shoot, I would stream the Netflix movies for myself. The kids would be on their own! lol

What do you have to pay outright for the phones??

We've been using this service and love it! The savings are hard to believe and such a welcome relief. Didn't know about the family controls, will have to check into using that.

@Stephanie Shields You're buying the phone out right since you're not locked into a contract. It depends on what phone you choose. Prices start at $39.99 and go up to a few hundred. You can also use a phone you already have if it's compatible with the service. My husband will be using a Galaxy he has already, with sim slot, so a phone will cost him nothing.

We are currently with Verizon and love our service with them thus far. Seems like the savings for the family plan would definitely be worth it - especially with a teen who never stops texting =/

Both my daughter and son have gone here and using their service. My daughter at first had concerns with coverage since she cannot be without her phone for work and everything has been great. She has saved so much monthly doing this.

I need a new phone, so I may be checking this out

We'll definitely have to look into this plan once our current contract is up. Right now I feel like we're paying way too much.

After giving our 12 yr old his first smartphone this year, I know first hand how important it is to be able to set limits :) I'm glad he's so pleased with the phone but prying out of his hands was another matter at first. I think a no contract plan is perfect for kids - great motivator to help them prioritize :)
