A few months ago I shared with you a review featuring one of only a handful of toys that has been able to with stand the test of time. Can you believe that this year marks Tinkertoys 100th anniversary!

Originally created in 1913 by inventor Charles Pajeau after he observed children playing with pencils and empty spools of thread, Tinkertoy has become a beloved toy which sews together the threads of generations. And while the idea behind Tinkertoys' remains the same, this is one toy which has only continued to improve with age.
In celebration of Tinkertoy’s 100th anniversary there have been some awesome new releases in the Tinkertoy line including the Tinkertoys: Pink Building Set which we’ve previously reviewed and loved.

This time around however we are checking out the 100 Piece Essentials Building Set, which features only the classic Tinkertoy parts and pieces; spools, rods, flags, washers end caps and more.
I love Tinkertoys for varies reason including the memories they bring back from my own childhood as well as for the creativity and imagination they inspire in my own children. And the 100 piece Essentials set was no different.
The addition of flexible rods has really improved on the creative aspect of the toy. Having the ability to bend pieces brings about a whole new range of designs you can create. My daughter always starts modeling her creations after one she she's on the box where my boys would rather create something unique to them. I enjoy seeing how all their imaginations work to create with Tinkertoys. I think it's amazing my daughter can simply look at a photo and put something together - I'm more of a step by step kind of girl.
Tinkertoys still hold all the classic elements within them that have made them a hit all these years. The bright bold colors are appealing to children and their large pieces make them easy to build with - not to mention they don't get sucked up in the vacuum quite as easy and don't hurt too bad if you step on them ;)
Buy It: The new TINKERTOY building sets are available on knex.com and at toy retailers nationwide. The 100 Piece Essentials Building Set sells for the SRP of is $34.99 complete with colorful instruction sheet that features building tips and ideas and sturdy packaging that can double as a storage box for easy clean-up.
