There aren’t many toys that can stand the test of time, especially in this age of technology. However, there are at least two creative favorites that have been around for many generations and are just as appealing to kids today. What are they? Why, Lincoln Logs and TinkerToys of course.
Lincoln Logs were originally created in 1916 and were actually named after President Abraham Lincoln, the President who began his celebrated life in a log cabin in Kentucky. And here we are in 2013 and this simple construction set still holds a great deal of appeal for children everywhere.
Made of only 100% real wood, each log has a notch which allows for connection when building. Lincoln Logs, part of the K’NEX family, do not splinter and help improve fine motor skills, cogitative skills, creativity and more.
With many Lincoln Log playsets available for purchase, creating and construction never gets old. For purpose of review we were sent the LINCOLN LOGS Horseshoe Hill Station.
Complete with 83 pieces including real wood logs, a cowboy, a horse, a roof and a door, my son was immediately hooked. The set also includes a step-by-step illustrated instruction book that proved simple enough for my son follow and build by.
I’ve always loved the look and feel of the Lincoln Logs and was happy to see that construction has basically stayed the same over the years. I was the proud owner of a few Lincoln Log sets as a child and could help but reminisce watching my son build the Horseshoe Hill Station.
Tinkertoys are another classic in the K’NEX Family and have been around since 1913! While the updated version has all the basic makings of classic tinkertoys, the Tinkertoys of today hold a little more fun and imagination. Take the TINKERTOY Pink Building Set that we received for example.
The TINKERTOY pink building set includes 150 durable, plastic pieces including American made rods & spools, and personality parts, buildable-figure and more. The pink packaging alone was enough to grab my little princess’s attention.
Encouraging imagination and construction of castles and the ultimate princess fantasy land, this set include a few tiny features that really made it stand-out with my daughter like a tiny princess crown, horse and of course the princess herself, which she was able to create. And just because the set was pink, that didn’t stop my boys from getting in on the action – they love to build. I was impressed to see a little bow and arrow set they created. That is the one thing I adore about open ended construction sets, seeing what little imaginations bring to life!
