The Kyocera Torque, Built Tough! Available on the Sprint Network

It’s hard to imagine how we made it in a world without our smartphones. Unfortunately with all the technology that has been put forth to us, one thing always seems to be lacking, and that's durability. I know I am certainly not alone in saying my husband and I have lost countless phones (and even a tablet) to water damage, a fall, or to our children’s little hands. Well Kyocera has stepped up to answer the call for a more rugged and durable smartphone with the $99.99 Torque for Sprint, the first push-to-talk phone with LTE support.

Waterproof smartphone, tough smartphones

While its look has a more manly appeal, encase in black rubber and tough enough for any construction site, the Torque is also tough enough to stand up to all that us moms are up against. With an advanced rugged design, textured Android hard keys, reinforced housing, non-slip Dura-Grip, loud, front-facing speakers, and all the apps that keep your kids entertained, this android with 4G service from Sprint  seems to be missing nothing.

What kind of durability are we talking?

The Torque meets U.S. military spec 810G for dust, shock, vibration, extreme temperatures, blowing rain, low pressure, solar radiation, salt fog, and humidity, along with IP67 standards for dust, sprayed water and full immersion up to one meter deep for up to 30 minutes.

Torque tough a rugged smartphone

Imagine the possibilities…

For someone like my husband the Torques durability is a must-have. As an outdoor worker battling not just the S. Florida humidity on a daily bases, but dredging through ponds, battling strong afternoon rain showers and whatever else the day tosses at him, the Torque has been cleared to stand-up to it all.

For someone like myself, spending my days at the park, swim classes, and in some cases using my phone as entertainment for my children while at the doctors or during a long car ride, the Torque was built to stand up to the sand, water and can be cleaned after sticky hands have been rubbed ALL over it. It can even withstand a dunk in the toilet! My kids can’t be the only ones to have tossed mom’s phone in the toilet – more than once.

The Torque is the first in the U.S to feature Kyocera’s Smart Sonic Bone-conduction Technology, for better, clearer sound in noisy environments.  This is great for reducing the amount of times I am apologizing and asking a caller to repeat themselves because the kids are bickering in the background. My husband also found it useful for calls he has no choice but to take outside, competing with the sounds of roaring traffic.

Now that we know the Torque is tough, how does it compare to other androids?

Running Android 4.0 it includes the basics you’ve come to expect: Chrome, Gmail, Maps, Navigation, Messenger, and any and all Google Play apps you wish. Also included are: voice recognition, e-mail, clock, safari browser, calendar, news and weather, voice dialer, flashlight, ICE, Sprint ID and Sprint Zone - to name a few.

The Toque features a 4-inch, 800-by-480-pixel LCD screen, which is fairly comparable. The automatic settings need to be shut off or the screen dims way too low, way too fast. It operates easy with just one hand, while providing enough screen that neither my little hand nor my husband’s big hands had any difficulties typing.

The 5MP rear facing camera and 1.3MP front facing camera perform better in well-lit environments, as does the video recorder. The outer audio speaker is wonderful for music and play back. I was more than surprised with the volume level and clarity. Reception was average – no complaints – but the clarity of the calls were crisp and clear, that background noise reduction was more than evident.

While not the most feminine of phones, this would make a great phone for the active mom, whose children frequently use their phone as well as the outdoor man. If your looking for a phone that can really hold up, yet still provides you all the Android features you've come to expect, the Torque is for you.

Currently the Kyocera Torque is available on the Sprint network for $99.99 with two year agreement.

Ha, I had to let you know you're not alone. My daughter dropped my phone in the potty once as well. We were looking for it for over an hour before we realized what happened. On another note, I love how rugged this phone sounds, perfect for lifes everyday mishaps. I'll be showing my husband.

Finally a tough phone! I can't tell you how many people I hear say that they've dropped their phones or had water damage due to "little hands."
Thanks for this review!
P.S. My name on the rafflecopter is Joni Mason.

With my son being in the Military and the amount of phone's he has gone through I am sure this would be the phone for him.

Forget looks, the most important thing for a cellphone is to have it be protected. This looks great.
