While typically the cold winter months are when many of us skip the healthy food and diets using the snow and cold as an excuse to do so, I find the opposite to be true in my home – at least when it comes to snacking. See for us those warm summer months mean more time outdoors, more sports and commitments, and less time for healthy snack choices.
When I’m not running around dropping one of my kids a friends or at practice, our days are pretty much the same. They return home from school, finish up their homework, and are out the door and into the pool. It doesn’t take long before the request for a snack start coming, “Mom, we’re hungry, bring us a snack!” At that point it’s my job to find something healthy, that they can eat outside while drying off, that isn’t going to produce a large amount of trash or require plates. Can you see my dilemma?
I’ve tried fruit snacks but those get sticky in the heat, ice pops but those didn’t have any substance to them, just artificial flavors and colors, and chips, well, everyone knows wet hands and chips, they don’t mix at all.

Found in the frozen treat aisle at our local Walmart, we picked up a box of Pineapple Mango Fruti's and two (2) boxes of Strawberry Pina Colada. These natural treats are bursting with flavor and are perfect for enjoying pool side, and apparently sometimes even in the pool. With everything else I have to worry about on a daily basis its nice to know I can provide my kids with a snack that isn’t just good for them, but one they actually enjoy and have come to quickly ask for by name.
In fact we enjoyed Chunks O Fruti frozen fruit bars so much, and the tastes were so authentic, I couldn’t help but wonder how simple it would be to make these fruit bars into a slushy treat and whipped up some Strawberry Colada’s of our very own. I have to say the flavors are all right in the fruit bar. If you wanted you could simply blend and serve, but with four kids I needed to stretch the mix a little more and came up with my own simple recipe.
What you need:
- 2 Strawberry Pina Colada Fruti bars, removed from their stick
- ¾ cup coconut milk
- ¾ cup pineapple juice
- 2 ice cubes
- Combine the Fruti’s bars, pineapple juice, coconut milk and ice in a blender, blend well at high speed.
- Pour into a glass, garnish with whipped cream and a strawberry; serve.
Optional: For some adult fun try adding 2oz of coconut rum to the mix or double the fun and yum by dropping an entire Fruti’s Strawberry Pina Colada bar into the cup!
