As much as I would like to say it was all the kids’ idea, it was me that was craving delicious warm fair funnel cake! And then I realized it had been so long since I made my own funnel cake, I was pretty sure my daughter had never even tried it – was that possible! With that we spent the weekend possibly being a little less than healthy, and fried up some of our most favorite treats. I will be sharing all our creations with you later in the week, but for now I had to share this simple funnel cake recipe, because not only is it good, it is fun too!
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1 tbsp. granulated sugar
- 2 cups milk
- 1 large egg
- Confectioners' sugar
- Canola oil, for cooking
In bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. In a smaller bowl, mix together milk and egg; add to the dry ingredients slowly whisking together.
In a large withed pot, heat about 3-4 inches of oil until hot or 350 degrees. Fill a funnel with batter, stopping it from coming out with your finger. Drizzle the batter into the hot oil, controlling the flow with your fingertip. You can swirl the batter, make it wide, fat, thin, the choice is yours – that is the fun part! Cook until crispy and golden in color, flip once.
Remove carefully from pan and drain over paper towels – or using a brown bag. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve.
Please remember the oil is VERY hot and can very easily burn you. Children should not make this treat on their own, nor should they stand too close while you’re preparing it, as hot oil tends to pops and spit when heated.
