The Voice of Color - Refresh Your Space Challange

I often find myself repainting rooms in our home. I get bored fast and a new color can add a whole new look and feel to a room. I’ve gone dark, I’ve gone light, but never bold. This year I decided to take the Voice of Color challenge when it came to my master bathroom, which is one room in the house we have never painted because of all the tile and small detail areas. This year I wasn’t just going to finally paint it, but was going to open myself up to something more colorful and bold.

Each year, color experts from The Voice of Color identify key trend colors for the PPG Pittsburgh Paints brand, and present them in signature five-color palette cards that offer color opportunities for all design elements in a space. This year’s Color Minded trends –  Everyday Hero, Elusion, Artful Expression, Discreet Luxury and Modern is Tech – are made up of 25 lively colors that encompass homeowners’ comfort with bold, dynamic hues. I received a collection of color pallet cards helping me to not just choose a color, but teaching me what other colors to incorporate into the room, leaving me way less intimated by bright and bold hues.

After looking over the colors I decided to jump outside my comfort zone and dive into the Artful Expressions Collection by choosing the bright and bold “Indian Maze.”

We headed out to our local Pittsburg Paints store where the service was more then outstanding. We arrived late and they open the store for us, they were courteous, helpful and introduced me to my new favorite Paint Scentsations.

Paint Scentsation are a built in air freshener incorporated into your paint which leaves your entire room/home smelling fresh for 4-6 months – this was obviously the perfect choice for bathroom paint.

When we got home, I went to work taping off the tile and trim.

Master bath before
Because of the way my bathroom is set up it's impossible to get the entire bathroom in one shot.
Next, I was ready for that first coat. I admit I was pretty nervous after the roller past over the wall for the first time. The color was much bolder then I had expected.

With all the painting I’ve done in our home the one thing I noticed is that a color hue can make all the difference in the way paint goes on. For example we painted the entire house, each room a separate color, all the same brand and type of paint. Everything went fine until we got to the "red room." The color required more time, finesse and coats. I found the same to be true with this Indian Maze shade. The hue shows each brush stroke, so it took multiple coats and attention to detail to complete the room.

We also decided to get a few gallons of Willow Herb to coordinate with the Indian Maze; I just wasn’t sure where to place it. Upon review my husband and I decided to paint our bedroom in the Willow Herb and coordinate the 3 additional colors in the Artful Expressions collection into our room and bathroom décor tying it all in together.

Painting with Willow Herb proved my above point. It’s easy to work with and covers in a single coat; it’s amazing the difference a color makes. We are still working on this additional challenge we gave ourselve, and I am also still shopping for all the best pieces - focusing on the remaining colors of the Artful Expressions pallet- to incorporate into our bold new quarters. I have to say though, I am really excited to see how it all pulls together in the end. And for now I think you can really get a feel from just the bathroom, as to the dramatic change it has undergone and the boldness of this artful line.

Stop by your local Porter Paint/Pittsburg Paint supplier for all your paint needs and to find this year’s Color Minded trends and tips on how to create that look you’ve always wanted.

Lovely color, subtle but cheerful. I think the color scheme selection you chose is really beautiful. We are in great need of some paint updates around here, going to have to make that a priority this summer!

I too like to decorate and redo a room with paint and the different colors that you can get. I did a room with the paint match-ups with Better Homes and Garden's paint room, and my bedroom turned out so nice. Better Homes and Garden's magazine shows you how to paint a room and what it will look like! Great way to know if you will like a room in a paint color.

I love the color that you chose! Sunshine in a can. I see that you did a lot of prep work too ~ makes all the difference. I despise painting bathrooms, so many things to paint around, but you did a fantastic job. I have not used this brand of paint before, but freshness and one coat? I wll try it for sure.
