Let me start off by saying my kids, though they love to eat, are super picky and the princess leads the charge when it comes to picky eaters. It took a full month of trial and error lunches for me to find a few healthy options that wouldn’t still be in her lunch bag when she returned home from school. Now that we are a little over two months into the school year, the same old choices have become boring to her, leading me in the search for smart snack that can be enjoyed for a lunch time treat or as an after school snack.
|Where is the good stuff, Mom?|
While getting ready to prepare the princess lunch for the following morning she decided enough was enough. With no good options left in the fridge we headed to Walmart to put a “spark” back into her lunch bag. While wondering around searching for some better options we came across Del Monte Fruit Cups in some great new flavors like Diced Apples and Pears with Caramel Flavors and Diced Pears with Vanilla Spice. Certainly these were very different then the fruit cups I was accustom to as a child. These flavors sounded so tempting and I couldn't help but love the convenience factor – open and eat! Surely they would be perfect for placing in her lunch bag as well as an easy after school option for my boys.
We arrived home and as soon as I began packing my daughters lunch for the next day, I realized a line was starting to form behind me. It was my boys, hungry from all that shopping and begging to try a Del Monte Fruit Cup. Where they really begging for fruit? This was great, now to hope they enjoyed it. They dug right into the Diced Apples and Pears with Caramel Flavors, almost licking the dish clean. And with only 60 calories per serving, gluten free and containing no high fructose corn syrup, Del Monte fruit cups were quickly becoming a snack I could feel good about. Good bye chips, hello flavorful fruit!
My only issue now was would Ms. Picky be open to Del Monte Fruit Cups in her lunch bag? I guess I would find out when she returned home from school the following day.
Low & behold she returned with an empty lunch bag, heading to the fridge for an after-school pick me up. I did offer her a few options yet she went right for those diced apples and pears. She isn’t typically a big fruit eater, but I think the addition of flavors like caramel, brown sugar, vanilla spice etc. to the Del Monte cups really makes for an exciting treat. Truth be told I don’t like fruit and was hesitant to try a fruit cup for myself. The flavor in Del Monte Fruit Cups really stands out, only enhancing fruits natural sweet goodness. They fruits were pair really well with what complements them. Of course we all know apples and caramel are delicious, but who new peaches were so amazing in brown sugar syrup or pears would partner well with vanilla spice.
If you enjoy fruit you will love these flavors and if you don’t enjoy fruit, I challenge you to give these a shot. You might find yourself surprised. Oh, and I might add, beware of fruit cup stealing husbands! I woke up to find nine, yes, nine fruit cups missing. As I searched and searched - I really wanted one for breakfast - I finally gave in, calling my husband. "Hey, do you know where the fruit cups are?" I asked. His reply " I may have ate them last night, I'll bring you home more tonight." Let me repeat he ate nine of them, who does that?! I guess I should mention while they are pretty darn good, I don't endorse eating them nine at a time ;-)
You can find Del Monte Fruit Cups and your Walmart, of course, and in the two new varieties -Diced Apples and Pears in Caramel Flavors along with Pears with Vanilla Spice.
