Does anyone else get anxiety over the holidays? With the only reason for the anxiety being all that holiday company you’ll be expecting?! With four kids and two dogs I will be the first person to admit it’s not always easy for me to keep up with my home. And then I turn around and the holidays are upon us. I quickly realize I have to act fast. My Mom will totally be looking under the couch. Really, she will! And then she will point the spec of dirt out to all my other company. For my own sanity I must have things looking there best.
Since the holidays are an expensive time of year as it is, I don’t have the money to make the major improvements. This year I’ve decided to do it myself. I was determined to find easy and inexpensive ways to improve on my home without breaking the budget. In a series of posts throughout the next few weeks I will be sharing with you these tips, improvements and products that made it all possible.
With so much needing to be done I wasn’t sure where to start. Then the obvious hit me! The family room and kitchen would be getting the most use, so let’s start there.
When we purchase our home the one thing that bothered me the most was the kitchen. The counters were a pure white corian, the floors white linoleum (that was looking dingy) and the cabinets were rather blah. The first changes I made was to make everything dark in hopes of hiding the dirt -dark walls, dark counters. Two years later all that darkness was really getting to me. The space looked so much smaller and it was a bit depressing. It was like all the natural lighting was sucked up into the unknown.
That was our kitchen and family room area that I had turned into one deep dark mess. How was I going to turn this around before the holidays? With the help of Glidden and a few others, that’s how. Now to my husband’s credit, he did offer me new counter tops, but I just couldn’t justify spending that much money before the holidays. Instead I opted to dedicating a weekend to one of those counter top transformation kits, while he put down some new tile.

While it brightened up the room some it was time to get down to the root of the problem, those deep brown walls! Thanks to Glidden paints, I was able to make my dream a reality and breathe a little life back into my home. Going from such a dark color to an "Autumn Haze" my husband was insisting we would need to first cover the walls with a primer – I don’t listen very well. I decided to take it upon myself to paint a test wall and see if primer was really necessity after reading that Glidden more often than not, covers many colors in just one coat. To mine and my husband's surprise, this was true. In just one coat Glidden covered the dark mess which was my kitchen – and family room!
What a difference a few gallons of paint make! The rooms were so much more airy, bright and clean looking. I could tell the difference between day and night once again! And what I really appreciated was the low odor. In fact, I didn’t smell any odor from Glidden paint.
We have a few more rooms to go and then I will give you the run-down on our adventures in painting and my new found love for Glidden! Stay tuned...
