If there is one thing I learned after four kids it’s to always find the toys with the longest life span, whether they are superior in quality or constructed to grow with your child. A toy doesn’t necessarily have to be crafted to grow with your child just physically; growing with your child mentally is just as good and sometimes even better. The DiscoverSounds Shape Sort & Scatter by Little Tikes is a great example of a toy built to grow with your child mentally from age 9mth to preschool.

What makes this toy so versatile are its multiple stages of play. In stage one you get free-play shape sorting, allowing infants to learn about shapes and colors. When a block is placed into the correlating shape hole the toy will "talk" and say the name of the block and color that was inserted. Once all the shapes are collected inside the sorter, the bottom drops out scattering the shapes.

At stage 2 the DicoverSounds Sorter allows for more directed shape sorting. In this mode the toy will prompt your child to find certain shapes, colors or numbers. If the child sorts the right piece they will be rewarded with a glowing green light.  If the child inserts the wrong shape the bottom will automatically drop and shapes will fall, making for great skill building for a toddler.

At stage 3 older children can really have some fun as the race against the clock to find the correct shape and color called out by the toy. If you can’t beat the clock, beware, the bottom will fall out and you must start all over.

Stage 3 was most appropriate for my daughter, especially since this month her classroom focus is on shapes. She has a ball with this “game” and has become quite good. Another feature found noteworthy is the fact that not only is there an English and Spanish mode, but, a French mode as well!
