I signed up for LifeLock a little over a month ago, and I have to say, it’s been a real eye opening experience. I love all the tips I have been learning, that help in not only protecting myself, but my family as well, from Identity theft. I am also really pleased at how quickly alerts and updates find their way to my inbox.
Last month I told you all about a fun sweepstakes going on, on the LifeLock Facebook page. In this Facebook sweep, players will be asked a series of 10 multiple choice questions per week related to helping protect your identity for a chance to win weekly and monthly prizes, continuing throughout 2013! And with the new month comes a new topic, can you guess what it is by this quiz question?
It's smart to check for the "https" before you donate online.
October is all about donating Safely Online. Something I honestly never thought too much about. I’ve always checked into a charity before making a donation, but what about the safety of the credit card you might be using to make that online donation?
So how do you make sure your personal information is secure and you’re donating to a legitimate charity? Take your time; we have all heard the charity scam stories. Do a little background research before making that donation and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Check for complaints, personal accounts form others who have donated, and if at all possible see if there is any proof (or lack of) that your money will be going to helping with the actual cause. I 100% believe in donating to charities I feel passionate about and you should too. Just do your homework first.
After you have verified to the best of your ability the charity, there are a few key things to look for. In the above sample question do you see the “s” after the http? This typically indicates a secure site, you should always check for this before entering any personal information especially credit card info. And remember if you’re not comfortable donating money online or off, there are tons of great organization in your own communities that you can donated everyday necessities, clothing, food and more to.
I’m not perfect and have a lot to learn in certain areas but, I considered myself good at quickly catching an eliminating those silly scams that find their way into my inbox daily. What I find harder to sort out is the information coming in from social networks. Sometimes it looks legit because it was sent from a friend and then you realize their account had been compromised. I’ve clicked a link a time or two and found myself redirected to various 3rd party sites. I guess personally my #1 tip would be, if you want to donate to certain charities or causes (after doing some research of course) go directly to that site. Do not go through some 3rd party site.
Have you ever fell victim to a charity scam, or had your personal information compromised? Do you have any tips of your own to share?
