I am a big kid! The holidays that bring joy to my own children, excite me just as much. In fact, as much as I dread all the walking, I can't wait for Halloween. I love being able to play dress up for the day and use my kids as an excuse.
The only thing that doesn’t excite me about Halloween is having the kids decide on a costume. I remember knowing what I wanted to be 6 months in advance. With my children you have to twist their arm just to get a maybe. I’m sure some of you are aware I like to get an early start, so this is super frustrating for me.
While my daughter would be happy with any fancy dress from Fancy Dress Ball, my oldest son isn’t even leaning in one particular direction. This is a yearly issue with him. Everyone else will be all set and ready to go, and I’m running out to the store to find him something. Then he finally decides on something and they're all sold out. This year I think it might be a bit more than just indecisiveness; I think it might be his age.
|It use to be so much simpler|
I haven’t got this part quite figured out yet since he is my oldest, but I think for him, as a boy, his interest in playing dress up for the evening might be diminishing. Can I really have a child old enough to no longer find the simple fun of Halloween, fun? I mean he doesn't even have interest in a scary Halloween costume or mask that will totally gross me out.
It is was hard for me to understand his lack of excitement for Halloween compared to years past. Like I said, I still get excited to dress up and simply walk around with the kids. I didn’t expect this day to come so soon. I figured I had at least another 2 years before he was blowing off Halloween or asking to go hang out with friends instead. I guess if his age is truly the reason, it will only get harder to let go from here.
Do you have older children? At what age did the novelty of Halloween wear off?
