In
this time of technology, we as families have become less active and started
spending less time with each other. I know my family is one hundred percent
guilty of this. We used to do all kinds of things together and now it seems like
everyone has a favorite system or gadget. On a typical day we often find ourselves separated in
different rooms, lounging around, doing our own thing. It’s been really
important for me over the past few months not only to get my kids active and
outdoors more, but for us to start doing more activities together as a family
once again. This week me and my family have taken the Together Counts pledge.
Together Counts is a nationwide program inspiring active and healthy living. The principle behind the program is Energy Balance, which means balancing the calories we consume with the calories we burn. This is a first of it’s kind coalition bringing together over 195 retailers, food and beverage manufacturers, restaurants, sporting goods and insurance companies, trade associations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and professional sports organizations for one purpose – getting more families eating and active together, with a message of moderation.

I
will say, one thing we haven’t given up on is family meals. We always eat
dinner together and find it to be a great
way to catch up on how every ones day went. However, since the weather has been
absolutely beautiful, we are trying to take the pledge one step further by
getting outside and playing a game of basketball, taking to dogs for a walk
around the neighborhood, or breaking out the water toys. I found it surprising how much fun I could have if I just said I'm doing it for the kids ;-)
It doesn’t
matter to me what the kids choose to do, as long as we are together doing it. My
main thing is seeing us active together, as we have honestly become quite lazy.
I’m not trying to push them into anything overly strenuous but just taking a
brisk walk and enjoying nature has already been rewarding to us all.
As
not to overwhelm the kids, I have been trying to incorporate things they are
used to doing solo. Instead of watching them each barricade themselves in a
room playing their favorite video games, we sit in the living room and enjoy a game together.
There are so many little changes you can make and spend just a little more time
together. So go ahead take the Together Counts Pledge today.

This is a great idea. I like the way you are incorporating all these activities into fun family events.
I wanna come play at your house! LOL...I'll bring the kids :)
What a great pledge to take. We can all use some more family time
I think back to when I was growing up, we always had family get-to-gethers, especially on holidays, it seems like we are all so busy that we have lost that time for our families, I know that I can call on my family at any time & they would be here for me, but I really wish we had more time with one another.
i love the water slide :) family time is priceless :)
