Family Friendly Vacationing in Carpinteria, California

For as long as I can remember, my family has vacationed in beautiful Carpinteria, a small coastal community just south of Santa Barbara.  Known by many as “California’s safest beach,” this charming, oceanside city is the perfect summertime destination for families.  Children play in the gentle waves or take their boogie boards out to ‘the raft,’ which floats about a hundred yards off shore.  Parents can relax and read on the sand, knowing their kids aren’t getting pummeled by the sea.

I have so many precious memories in Carpinteria, and it will forever be my favorite city.  If you and your family are looking for a relaxing vacation, I suggest a week in Carpinteria.  A few of my Carp vacation favorites include the following…

1.        The Spot.  You think In-n-out has a great burger?  Prepare yourself.  The Spot will knock your socks off.  This is the ideal beach burger joint.  Located on the main strip just a few blocks from the sand, you will find people in their wet swimsuits lined up to order a Spot burger with fries, a shake, or possibly some tasty onion rings.  Let’s face it…you’re on vacation and deserve something dangerously delicious.  The Spot will satisfy your needs!

2.       Robitaille’s.  You might not be able to pronounce it right away, but you’ll learn fast.  This is one of the best candy stores you will ever experience.  Robitaille’s Candies has been around for 40 years and is home to the famous Presidential Inaugural Mints.  This signature sweet is worth the trip alone.  The mints are handmade and will melt in your mouth.  Delicious!! These are great gifts, or they can simply be a treat for yourself.  Besides the mints, you can find a variety of toffees, sour belts, gummies, chocolates, and other goodies.

3.       State Beach.  This is Carpinteria’s main beach, where you’ll find sunbathing, sand castle construction, dog walking, and some camping.  One of my favorite activities in Carp is to simply walk along the shore of State Beach, going north from the campground.  You pass by a gorgeous stretch of homes on your right, with incredible purple mountains in the background.  On your left, you admire the sparkling Pacific.  You can easily walk to Summerland when the tide is low.  State Beach is the perfect place to post up for a long, relaxing afternoon of reading, swimming and walking.  Bring a sweater and stay late to watch the sunset!

4.       La Super-Rica Taqueria!  Without a doubt, you will love the calm and quiet in Carpinteria, but you also may want to venture into Santa Barbara for a night.  My top recommendation for a dinner in Santa Barbara is La Super-Rica, arguably the most amazing Mexican restaurant in California.  This neon-trimmed ‘hole in the wall’ taco shop always has a ridiculously long line, and for good reason!  It’s cheap, it’s delicious, and it’s worth the wait.  Located on a visible corner at 622 N. Milpas Street, La Super-Rica attracts people from all over.  Order at least 2 soft tacos, for they are small and tasty.  Let your mouth water as you watch them being freshly prepared.  Hands down, this is one of my favorite Mexican joints, and I’ve had my share of burritos and tacos.

Think about it: on your vacation, you want to eat great food and completely relax.  Carpinteria offers the perfect atmosphere for your much needed R&R.  You don’t need to spend hundreds on airfare to some tropical destination.  Find cheap flights on Travelocity.  You can land in the Santa Barbara Airport, just north of Carpinteria.  You should look for a Travelocity promo code before purchasing your tickets to save even more on your trip.  Enjoy beautiful sand and sunshine on a much smaller budget and choose Carpinteria!
