Neato XV-11 Robotic Vacuum

Vacuuming is a daily chore in my home. In fact between the kids and dogs it can certainly feel like a never ending one. I've looked at robotic vacuums in the past but was honestly scared of them. In my mind they were fragile, couldn't possibly have a good suction and most certainly wouldn't be able to do as good a job as I. When I was asked to review the Neato XV-11 I was up for the challenge. I was very interested in giving it a test drive through my home and seeing how it really matches up against a traditional vacuum.

When the Neato XV-11 arrived, I wasn't sure what to expect as far as set up I have had no prior experience with robotic vacuums. Much to my surprise it was rather simple. The filter and dirt bin were in place all I had to do was set up the charging space, leaving at least 3-5 feet on each side of the base for the Neato XV-11 to navigate to. The Neato XV-11 had some charge already but I figured it best to charge it completely before my first use. Charging the unit is simple. In fact after initial set-up the Neato XV-11 Robotic Vacuum will return to it's charging dock on it's own, when it's battery is running low or the house has been cleaned.

I was waiting impatiently patiently for the Neato to get to it's full charge - You can tell the Neato is fully charged by a half moon shaped light. Blinking orange means it needs to be charged, steady orange is still charging, blinking green is almost done and steady green means it's ready to get to work. Once the Neato was at full charge I figured my first order of business was to give her a name - Betty! from this point on the Neato XV-11 will be replace by the name/term Betty since this is what we now call her/it.

The first time we but Betty to work I had yet to schedule a cleaning time - You can schedule a time for Betty to start cleaning automatically Sunday- Friday at anytime of day or night, once you initially program the day and time. You can also double press her start up button to activate a full house cleaning, instead of scheduling. Have a quick mess to clean? Betty has a spot clean cycle as well, great for when the kids some crumbs in a certain area or the dog eats his bone in the middle of my den.

So, I started Betty on her first total house clean and believe me the house was in need of a GOOD vacuum. Betty first acquired her position and then went to work. I followed her around, because I just didn't think she would really be able to go from room to room and not miss a spot. She started in the living room and headed down the hall. I was immediately thinking this isn't good, she didn't come close to finishing the living room. To my surprise she has a pattern and she stuck to it, she came back and cleaned the living room completely as well as the other rooms available to her. In fact she did such a good job you could see the marks in the carpet from her powerful suction.

I keep the bedroom doors closed when I set a total house cleaning because you do have to make sure the path is clear or debris that could get stuck in the brush. Betty will try to suck it all up and her wheels give her that extra roll over power. She cleans the living room, kitchen, dining room, den and hallway in about an hour. Obviously if you have some one coming over in ten minutes your better off running a traditional vacuum. But the Neato is great as a set it and forget it, for daily up keep. Betty also lets me know when her dirt bin is full, if her brush gets stuck or her path is obstructed on her LCD Screen. Which I love because I don't have to play the guessing game.

The Neato 99% of the time gets through the rooms listed above in one charge but when she needs and extra boost she will return to her charging dock, when she is done charging she returns to the EXACT spot she left off. This totally blew my mind! How does she do this? Using its laser-based Room Positioning System , the Neato XV-11 has a 360-degree view of a room, allowing it to map the most efficient cleaning path by analyzing walls, furniture, doorways and other obstacles up to four meters away. It avoids most obstacles that other robots can only detect by impact. Once it outlines the designated area, the Neato XV-11 covers the perimeter first and then cleans inside it, using a back-and-forth pattern to ensure complete coverage.

Using the "RPS" Betty is not supposed to bump furniture like other robotic brands do. The Neato does bump my furniture once in awhile, but in general I was super impressed by the way it traveled the house and in and out, between the legs of my ends tables. I certainly can't do that with with my normal vacuum.

The Neato also comes with magnetic stripping that prevents the vacuum from crossing into an area or bumping. Since I just close the doors to the areas I'm not ready for the Neato to enter, I have not seen any use for it.

So would I now recommend the Neato XV-11? Absolutely! I would keep a traditional vacuum around for a quick clean but in general the Neato XV-11 (AKA Betty) does a better job then I, and is able to navigate under furniture I can not - like under the bed, couch, dining room chairs etc. It also does a fabulous job of picking up pet hair as well as all the other dirt and debris. You never again have to switch modes as the Neato XV-11 makes it's way from carpet to tile, linoleum, hardwood and more with ease. I am officially spoiled, with this super time saver.
