With the addition of our second dog to the household and the hot summer temperatures we receive here in Florida, I really wanted to find a cute dog house to help provide some shade for my four legged babies when went out, as well as protect them from any shower or storms that may pop up. I new Hayneedle would have a great selection to get me started choosing the best dog house to suite our needs.
Of course Hayneedle had a store devoted to dog houses, doghouses.com with some great selections. After much debate, I decided that the Extreme Outback Log Cabin would be a cute addition to our yard.
"The Extreme Outback Log Cabin Features:
■Upgraded model with shingled asphalt roof and feet protectors
■Perfect for extreme weather, whether cold or hot
■Naturally weather-resistant wood
■Solid fir wood construction
■Weatherproof asphalt shingle roof
■Waterproof leg protectors resist moisture
■Assembles in three easy steps
■Size options available
I assembled this house myself in time at all. When I emptied the box it was clear which piece went where. Assembley followed a three step order of frame, roof and floor. As soon as I had the walls screwed together, the roof and floor were a breeze. I would recommend a drill over a screwdriver though, just to make the process move a long quicker.
I will however warn, that the doggy door I was sent had it's own set of directions, I didn't bother to look at until after I complete the house..Big mistake! I had to place the door on after construction which was almost impossible even though I was able to squeeze through the dog house to "try" and put the door on, it didn't leave much room for hammering. After a few failed attempts I just decided to place the door on the outside frame, instead of the inside.
Overall, I thought the house was adorable, of course my kids say the dogs need a dog bed inside, we will see. I loved the roof and ease of assemble, especially the floor which, you just place down in sections and can be moved about slightly to remove dirt etc. My older dog wants nothing to do with the new house, but the puppy loves it and uses it quite often. It's great for keeping him off the ground and providing shade and protection from the elements.
The medium sized house I can see become to small for my EVER growing puppy. My boxer fits inside nicely ( when she will go in) but she is on the small side for her breed at 45lbs. I think for my Pitt/BullDog mix he will eventually need an extra large dog house. Also if your dog is a chewer I could see the soft wood, maybe becoming a problem. So far my dogs haven't attempted to "chew it" but I could see them easily being able to do so if they put their minds to it.
